EDITOR'S LETTER

Holiday // Winter 2025–26

Why do we decorate for the holidays? And why, every winter, do we suddenly feel the urge to bring out the knit blankets, string up the fairy lights, and make our homes feel just a little more magical?

At Opposite Wall, that question sits at the heart of every winter collection we create. For 2025, as in years past, I found myself drawn to the simple truth that our holiday rituals are less about perfection and more about the indelible mark the anticipation of the holidays holds. The first snowfall. The first Christmas scented candle lit. The moment the house begins to smell like balsam fir again. These small signals tell us, quietly and reliably: you’ve arrived at the good part of the year.

This fall, when our team sat down to build the winter 25–26 collections, we didn’t just start with trends or colour palettes. We started with a feeling. Mostly, it was the nostalgia of childhood holidays and the quiet pleasure of winter nights. The small joys that make the season worth leaning into rather than simply surviving. We asked ourselves a simple question: How do we make art that feels like home in winter?

Decorating, after all, is personal. It’s emotional. It’s a private kind of storytelling. The art we choose becomes part of our daily life. They are little reminders of who we are and what kind of space we’re trying to create. Maybe it’s a snowy landscape that looks a little bit like the place your family used to go skiing every Christmas break, or maybe it’s the playful mid-century palette that takes you back to the wrapping paper your grandmother used every year.

Or even more simple: just pieces that are full of the soft greens, nutmeg browns, and candle-flame tones that make your space feel safe and warm.

I’ve spent my career designing and creating from that place, from memory more than moodboard. Nostalgia is my north star; joy the compass I keep returning to. And I think, especially now, we’re all craving something steadier than passing trends. We all want to have a home that feels layered, personal and is a place of refuge to hunker down as the world goes a little quieter for a few months.

So that’s what this season at Opposite Wall is built on: collections meant to feel lived-in, and that tap into our shared memory. Winter art that doesn’t try to keep up, but tries to keep you company.

As you make your home for the holidays this year, I’d encourage you to start with feeling before anything else. Start with a memory, a colour that comforts you, a special atmosphere you want to create. Let that guide what you bring into your space. The right art doesn’t simply decorate a room, it creates a sense of place.

However you celebrate, and whatever you’re welcoming in this winter, I hope these collections bring a little warmth, a little nostalgia, and a little magic to your walls.

Warmly,
